Medicare is a federal health insurance program. If you’re 65 or older or have certain disabilities, you may be eligible for coverage. There are four main parts of Medicare, each offering coverage for different types of medical care.
Part A Hospital Insurance
When you sign up for Medicare, you automatically get Part A. This coverage may help cover your hospital stays, end-of-life hospice care and sometimes skilled nursing care. Most people don’t have to pay extra for Part A because they already paid Medicare taxes when working.
If you need medical care covered by Part A, you may be responsible for deductibles and copayments.
Part B Medical Insurance
Part B may help cover the costs of seeing a doctor, medical diagnostic tests and other outpatient services. Many people must pay a monthly premium for Part B coverage. If you need medical care covered by Part B, you may also pay a deductible and copayments.
Part C Medicare Advantage Plans
Signing up for Medicare Advantage is optional. Private insurers provide this coverage to replace Original Medicare (Parts A and B). Even if you plan to sign up for a Medicare Advantage plan, you must enroll in Medicare and pay for Part B coverage.
Medicare Advantage plans may provide extra services such as dental and vision care. Many Medicare Advantage plans include drug coverage.
Medicare Advantage plans have a geographical network of participating health care providers. Confirm that your preferred providers are in-network before signing up for a specific Medicare Advantage plan.
Insurers offering Medicare Advantage plans determine premiums. Working with an experienced agent is crucial when exploring your Medicare Advantage options.
Part D Prescription Drugs
Medicare Part D may help cover the cost of medications. Private companies provide this optional coverage per Medicare’s rules about drug coverage. Each plan has different costs and lists of covered drugs.
Check annually to see if your plan still covers the necessary medicines. You can change plans during open enrollment from Oct. 15 to Dec. 7.
